Three writing prompts to work with over the weekend. Even if you make 15 minutes to write, it counts! Happy writing!

Write a story that begins or ends with this sentence from Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf: “‘Oh this horror!’ she said to herself, as if she had known all along that something would interrupt, would embitter her moment of happiness.”

Write a story, essay, or poem where a character feels like she owes someone words. Find a way to incorporate all or part of the following sentences from Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf: “She owed him words: “sentimental”, “civilised”; they started up every day of her life as if he guarded her. A book was sentimental; an attitude to life sentimental. “Sentimental”, perhaps she was to be thinking of the past.”

Write a story, essay, or poem about a sound or a song that affected you or affects one of your characters. You may use the following description from Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf for some inspiration: “the sound of St. Margaret's [church bells] glides into the recesses of the heart and buries itself in ring after ring of sound, like something alive which wants to confide itself, to disperse itself, to be, with a tremor of delight, at rest…”
